CAPRI-OVIS is a European innovation project focused on developing a next-generation system for the electronic identification and traceability of small ruminants through a ruminal bolus with integrated GPS technology. The project aims to deliver a reliable, high-tech solution that provides permanent animal identification, real-time location tracking, and intelligent analysis of collected data. By integrating advanced digital technologies, CAPRI-OVIS supports the development of precision livestock farming and sustainable agriculture.
The project has been developed in response to one of the major challenges in sheep and goat farming—the loss of conventional ear tags and the difficulty of tracking animals in extensive grazing systems. The proposed solution provides permanent electronic identification, eliminates the risk of identifier loss, and ensures reliable traceability throughout the animal’s entire lifecycle.
As part of the project, an integrated digital platform is being developed to enable real-time monitoring of animal location and movement, behavioral analysis, and secure storage of comprehensive information for each animal, including origin, veterinary records, health status, and movement history. This approach enhances biosecurity, improves traceability throughout the food supply chain, and optimizes farm management and decision-making processes.
